Alina Nuebel
ARTIST STATEMENT
For me, the nexus of the biology-art crossover exists within the observational process.
The tension between conscientious documentation (the biologist) and improvisational abstraction (the artist) is present in my art and my life, but always begins with ‘Now that’s cool/ Oh, how beautiful/ Huh, that’s interesting’. I seek to dissolve myself into the act of observational documentation – not to remove my self and biases (as the scientific method advocates), but to acknowledge and celebrate my role as the conduit between subject and canvas, such that the subjective experience becomes part of what is observed.
ARTIST BIO
Alina Nuebel is a multi-disciplinary artist in northern California whose work straddles biology and art. By synthesizing science and art, observation and abstraction to portray commonplace or unnoticed facets of the natural world, their art finds the sublime within the minute or the mundane. Nuebel’s work always maintains a focus on local species, landscapes, and ecological relationships.
After studying art and ecology at Humboldt Sate University (now Humboldt Polytechnic University), Nuebel worked as a field biologist in California and the Midwest for studies examining the dynamics of pollinator populations and demographics in agricultural landscapes. Since returning to Santa Rosa, they have managed a creative practice out of their Santa Rosa studio, produced multiple large-scale mural projects, and taught workshops at the intersection of science and art through SSU, the Sonoma Community Center and Pepperwood Preserve.
